Overview
Permanent residence in the UK is known as 'Indefinite Leave to Remain'. You can apply for this after the qualifying period of 5 years (in most cases) depending on the category of visa you hold. If you hold the right type of visa then you must show that you have enough knowledge of language and life in the UK. You MUST make your application before your current permission to stay in the UK ends.
